FAQs

A ‘Passenger & Goods Hoist’ (also known as a Construction Hoist, Personnel Hoist, or Construction Elevator) is an electro-mechanical means of vertically transporting passengers and/or materials up and down a structure within a fully enclosed platform (hoist car). Typical applications for a Construction Hoist would be in high rise building construction or large scale industrial applications such as power generation.

A ‘Goods Hoist’ (also known as a Material Hoist, Goods Only Hoist, or Builders Hoist) is an electro-mechanical means of vertically transporting materials up and down a structure. This type of hoist may only be used for the transport of materials, passenger use is prohibited.

A typical application for a Goods Hoist would be for the safe transportation of building materials or scaffolding on construction sites.

A ‘Transport Platform’ (also known as a TPM) is an electro-mechanical means of vertically transporting passengers and/or materials up and down a structure within a semi-enclosed platform. A Transport Platform could be considered a hybrid between a Passenger & Goods Hoist and a Goods Hoist, typically being modular in design allowing for greater flexibility of configuration and ease of loading materials, but with the ability to carry passengers at a reduced operating speed. A typical application for a Transport Platform would be in building construction / refurbishment.

A Passenger & Goods Hoist must have a fully enclosed hoist car and as such has the ability to operate at maximum speeds greater than that of a Transport Platform which is limited to a maximum speed of 12 m/min, whilst most modern Transport Platforms will typically be modular in design allowing for greater flexibility of configuration and ease of loading materials.

The specification of a hoist will typically be dictated by the anticipated maximum payload size and weight, as well as other considerations such as whether or not the hoist is required for the use of passengers, and the loading and unloading requirements on site.

Most modern Construction Hoists, Goods Hoists, and Transport Platforms are semi-customisable and can be configured to accommodate a variety of different applications, this may include changes to the A, B, and C gates (where fitted), extensions to the size of the hoist platform, the use of single or double width landing gates, and the fitment of optional items such as scaffold carriers and landing calling buttons etc.

Construction Hoists, Goods Hoists, and Transport Platforms are manufactured with a range of payloads from 200Kg up to 4000Kg (SWL).

In the United Kingdom the maximum operating speed for a Goods Hoist is 24 m/min, for a Transport Platform is 12 m/min, and for a fully enclosed Passenger & Goods Hoist the maximum speed is set by the manufacturer, but is typically between 40 m/min and 60 m/min.

The delivery lead-time for our construction hoists is dependent on the size, type and configuration required, we provide indicative lead-time/s with our quotation, however, final lead-times will be agreed at the time of order typically with a minimum of 2 to 4 week mobilisation period.

With dedicated regional sales and service teams, NTP have the ability to support projects throughout the whole of England and Wales.

In most circumstances we are able to provide a budgetary quotation with some basic information, key considerations would be:

  • Hoist type (Goods only or Passenger and Goods use)
  • Maximum payload required in Kg
  • Maximum payload dimensions required if known (Length x Width x Height)
  • Top landing height required in Meters
  • Number of landings to serve
  • Required duration
  • Project reference or site location

You can complete our online enquiry form, or alternatively email your enquiry to info@ntp-group.com

Following your enquiry you will receive a phone call from one our technical sales team to discuss your requirements and offer advice with your specific application. A budgetary quotation can usually be provided at this stage without the need for a site visit, however, if required we will be happy to attend a site visit without charge.

Should you wish to proceed further we will carry out a detailed site survey to agree any specific site requirements, at this stage our budgetary quotation may be revised inline with the final project scope. Following order, installation drawings, loading calculations and RAMS will be provided for Temporary Works Approval prior to works being undertaken on site.

A Thorough Examination is a mandatory examination required under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Thorough Examination of a hoist must be carried out by a competent person at specified intervals, including all safety-critical components, and a written report of the examination provided.

In the United Kingdom the applicable standard for Construction Hoists is: BS EN 7212, for Goods Hoists is: BS EN 12159, and for Transport Platforms is: BS EN 16719.

Our hoists are provided on a ‘bare rental basis’ which means that the hirer is responsible for the provision of competent hoist operators. We recommend hoist operators hold a relevant CPCS or IPAF hoist operator qualification, training can be provided by NTP at additional cost if required. NTP will provide Operator Familiarisation for competent hoist operatives only as part of the initial handover process.
